Now, on to the top-level class descriptions, after a short discussion on picking parties. So make sure that you plan ahead and flag your characters when possible - sometimes you won't have a second chance to flag them. Also, if you forget to flag characters for promotion, there is no possible way (short of using a trainer) to get a higher class for your characters. Once you have been promoted, there is no going back. Once you have completed the quest you usually have to return to whoever gave you the quest to be promoted. The only way to change your mind about the class they will be is to flag yourself as wanting to be a member of the other available class and completing their quest first. Once you flag a character, they cannot be unflagged. Afterwards they will ask you to flag characters for promotion. Once you find a trainer, they will give you a quest. Now learn this and learn it well - promoting is a simple process, but there is no going back. That ability is reserved for top class characters. Base classes cannot get more than Expert in any skills. Initiates turn into either scholars (offensive casters), or healers (defensive casters). Each of those classes can lead to two other classes. Now, fighters have the chance to be promoted into either mercenaries (warriors without magic), or crusaders (warriors with magic). As you proceed through the game, you will have the chance to enhance your characters by getting promotions. At the start of the game your characters can belong to one of two classes - fighters or initiates.
